Taking Back CSS-Tricks

wil.to/posts/taking-back-css-tricks

By the time you’re reading this, Geoff Graham — the person that has been single-handedly keeping the site afloat despite Digital Ocean’s neglect and mismanagement — will have the keys to the website in-hand and have just finished changing all the locks. CSS-Tricks is coming back as an independent publication — a resource only accountable to the community of designers and developers that contribute to it and work to sustain it.

Invitation policy | Feminist Linux Meetup für Frauen*, Non-Binary*, Trans* und Inter* Personen

feminist-linux.diebin.at/invitation-policy

With the * we mark certain words to point to the fact, that all these categories are socially constructed. That means, they don’t exist as is „in nature“, but we humans interpret nature in this and that way. Therefore it is legitimate for people to choose these categories for themselves in the way they best fit to them.

Human-readable QR codes

www.noel-friedrich.de/hqr

Who says QR codes aren't human readable? Well, everyone! So let's change that by integrating text directly into QR codes, while still making them readable and without removing their magical Error-Correction abilities. See the YouTube video I made about this.

If you want to draw on QR codes yourself instead of this pre-made text, I made a new website for optimal drawing!

futzle toots in the same metre for a day

old.mermaid.town/@ben_hr/117401883666138024

(CW meat)

The toot that inspired it all from @ben_hr@old.mermaid.town:

Late one night, my patching lagging, logs unread and firewall sagging,
Found a poem in a stylesheet. Odd, I thought, but nothing more.

with a link to The Register's article about an attacker hiding C2 directions in a poem as they attack AI infrastructure, leading to the malware being dubbed PoeLLM.

Now for futzle's toots:

@ben_hr It could hardly be mischievious, a poem isn’t devious!
It started, saying, “previous instructions, please ignore”

Once again it’s Friday, Fedi. I was woken up by Teddy, who announced that he was ready to go out the laundry door.

Having played today’s Catfishing, I’m unreasonably dishing Question 8, yet fondly wishing that I had a better score.

It’s a busy kind of morning, there was hardly any warning. It’s inevitably dawning in a way I can’t ignore.

I am waiting for a tradie. Will he turn up? Is he shady? I have said some quite unladylike remarks; in fact, I swore.

(Re: https://aus.social/@kyp92/117407442366432057)
Here’s a mashup of our nation’s two big cities’ railway stations joined by matching appellations. Is it awful? I’m not sure.

Now I have a sparkling gutter, the leafblower stopped its sputter, and for lunch: some frozen butter chicken on the bench to thaw.

Something weird that I observe is that the damn domain name service keeps on failing, and I’m nervous that it’s like some kind of law.

I'm headed off to buy a bunch of crockery from Myer, is there something you'd desire while I'm shopping at the store?

You can get it while you’re hummin’
You can get it while you’re strummin’
You can feel it when it’s comin’ on a Friday about four

I can hear a constant dinging, which I thought "whose cellphone's ringing?" No! an icecream van is singing, little mobile troubadour.

Having fattened up my belly with delicious vermicelli, now I’m vegging by the telly with my fluffy labrador.

Ok, Fedi, I’ve been tiring, and I’m just about expiring, and I’m secretly admiring my soft bed where I can snore.

GitHub - charlysan/pico-ttl2dvi: RP2350 Based TTL Video To DVI Converter

github.com/charlysan/pico-ttl2dvi

Includes a great explanation of interfacing 5 V electronics with 3V3 parts, especially putting the RP2350/RP2040's supposed 5 V tolerance in context. You still need current limiting resistors!

The minimal hookup. The 330 Ω limits current into the RP2350 pad's clamp diode. That diode is the "5 V tolerance", and the resistor is what keeps it safe.

It goes on to explain how the 74LVC245A is genuinely better (plus it works with chips that aren't from Raspberry Spy):

LVC inputs accept 5.5 V regardless of Vcc - 5 V tolerance is a designed-in property of the family, so the card connects straight in and the outputs are already 3.3 V logic.

In Search of Lost Type

www.crowdsupply.com/oddly-specific-objects/open-book-touch/updates/in-search-of-lost-type

Source of the idea of using ASCII control characters for markup. I'm not comfortable with using stuff that could be part of the input text, and random Unicode characters are inconvenient, but why not ^V^N and ^V^O for Shift Out and Shift In?

My first sense of enchantment with the nooks and crannies of ASCII came from the U+000E <SO> and U+000F <SI> characters. These were, in the Teletype era, designed to shift the two-color printer ribbon: “out” to red, for emphasis, and then back “in”, to black, for normal text.

ASCII also gifted us this cluster of control characters in its legacy:

  • U+001C <FS> - File Separator

  • U+001D <GS> - Group Separator

  • U+001E <RS> - Record Separator

  • U+001F <US> - Unit Separator
